I once believed that the CEO role demanded a meticulous control over every moving piece, an exhaustive knowledge of all facets, and an almost superhuman ability to navigate challenges. This didn’t look particularly interesting for me, as a young leader. However, my experiences working closely with many different CEOs and business leaders from across the globe have brought forth a profound realization – leadership is more about people than numbers. It’s about mastering aspects that extend beyond the realms of traditional business education.

It is a missed opportunity that schools and universities do not teach about the counterintuitive techniques needed for C-level qualifications.

Here’s the comprehensive CEO checklist, delving deeper into each key point. A list you will never find in your MBA curriculum, Monsters.

✅ Storytelling is a Superpower

In the dynamic landscape of leadership, storytelling emerges as a superpower. It’s not merely about recounting events; it’s a potent tool to build influence and take others on a transformative journey. Successful CEOs understand that a compelling narrative can resonate deeply with their teams. Whether it’s articulating the company’s vision, outlining strategic goals, or addressing challenges, incorporating a well-crafted story adds an emotional layer to communication. This emotional connection fosters a sense of shared purpose and unity, making the leadership message more memorable and inspiring. No joke, this is scientifically proven. When we tell stories, our audience’s brains “light up” in the same zones that our brain do. This phenomenon is called “brain-to-brain -coupling”.

✅ Less is More

Contrary to the misconception that having numerous priorities signifies effective leadership, successful CEOs understand that less is more. The ability to declutter life from distractions and focus on what truly matters is a hallmark of effective leadership. CEOs who streamline priorities ensure that their energy and resources are directed toward the most impactful endeavors. This approach not only enhances personal productivity but sets a powerful example for the entire organization. It communicates the importance of prioritization and strategic focus, guiding the team toward collective success. I learned that successful CEOs practice a counterintuitive leadership technique called Pruning, to which I have dedicated an entire blog post. Similarly like in gardening, you need to cut off some branches to make room for new roses to bloom in your business life, too.

✅ Be Authentic

Authenticity stands as the cornerstone of effective leadership. The often-touted advice to “fake it till you make it” lacks resonance in the area of genuine leadership. People possess an innate ability to discern authenticity, and successful CEOs recognize this. Embracing one’s true self, unapologetically, becomes a powerful driver of trust and credibility. While authenticity may not resonate with everyone, it fosters a culture of openness and genuine connection. CEOs who lead with authenticity inspire trust, loyalty, and a collaborative spirit within their teams. Authenticity is not an excuse for rude behaviour, either. Successful CEOs understand their roles and act in a respectful way across all levels of the organisation. Being authentic also gives way for compassion towards others that feel vulnerable or exposed. And this is how successful CEOs build a culture of psychological safety, where people feel free to express their opinions without fear.

✅ Have Fun

Amidst the strategic maneuvers and serious decision-making, the importance of finding the fun side of leadership cannot be overstated. CEOs who derive genuine pleasure from their roles are more likely to reach their full potential. The enthusiasm and passion they bring to their work become contagious, positively influencing the entire organization. While leadership comes with its share of challenges and responsibilities, infusing an element of enjoyment into the journey is crucial for sustained success. It’s about finding a balance between the gravity of leadership and the joy derived from making a meaningful impact. Colleagues need to have fun at work and CEOs are the ones that champion finding true joy in spending time at work. Needless to say, our jobs do make impact on wider society, so why don’t we just enjoy them? Making an impact is fun, isn’t it?

In summary, the CEO checklist delves into realms beyond traditional MBA metrics, emphasizing soft skills honed over time that significantly contribute to effective leadership. Perhaps the question that warrants contemplation is why these crucial aspects are often overlooked in traditional education.
